Colour as strategy. Space as experience.
Studio KROMATIKA - strategic colour design for the spaces we live, work and heal in.
Colour is not decoration. It is a language - one that shapes how we experience space, how we feel within it, and how we remember it long after we have left.
Studio KROMATIKA was founded on that belief.
I am Maja Kaurin, an architect and environmental colour designer based in Brussels. I work with architects, interior designers, institutions and municipalities to bring strategic colour thinking into projects where environmental quality and spatial identity truly matter - schools, healthcare spaces, public buildings, urban environments, and material collections.
My approach begins with listening - to a place, to its history, its light, its people. I use spatial colour mapping to read the atmosphere of an environment before proposing anything, developing colour strategies that are grounded in that specific context rather than applied from the outside. The result is spaces that feel coherent, intentional, and deeply themselves.
I hold a degree in Architecture from the University of Zagreb and an MSc in Environmental Colour Design from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, complemented by a Certificate in Healthier Materials and Sustainable Buildings from Parsons School of Design. My work spans urban colour plans and chromatic city charts, architectural and interior colour design, participatory community projects, and professional education.
Internationally, I serve as Vice-President of ICA-Belgium (Interdisciplinary Colour Association Belgium) and am a member of the AIC Study Groups on Environmental Colour Design and Colour Education - communities that keep my practice connected to the leading edge of colour research and thinking worldwide.
I also believe, from direct experience, in the power of colour and environment to support health and wellbeing. That belief runs through everything Studio Kromatika does - from a colour strategy for a single building to a long-term colour identity programme for an institution.
Collaboration is at the heart of how I work. Every project is a conversation, and I bring to it not just expertise but genuine curiosity about your specific situation. If you are wondering whether what you are working on might benefit from a colour specialist, it probably would, and I would love to hear about it.
Get in touch - I don't bite, and the first conversation is always just a conversation.
Alongside the studio, I maintain an art practice and write about colour, place and perception. You can find that work at majakaurin.com and The Colour Spotter Chronicles.
